27-04-06ARE GHANAIAN JOURNALIST HANDICAPPED IN ICT REPORTING
Journalist have in recent times been critised for the inability to report accurately on issues relating to ICT or inform their listeners on what ICT is all about and it benefits. But have we ever considered why the journalist is handicapped in reporting on ICT or the factors that have resulted in the low public education on ICT. It is quite interesting that despite the new trends in ICT where new media tools have been developed to assist and facilitate the work of journalist, there are still newsrooms where reporters write their news items on pieces of papers for it be edited by the news editor. That is not all; some media houses cannot boost of many computers in the news room, not to talk about connecting to the internet. This situation has been blamed partly due to the cost involved in connecting to the internet. But should that be an excuse if the media house is poised to broadcast or publish current and relevant issues to its audience. How many media houses have taken the initiative to train their reporters to use new media tools to improve public access to stories aired or published? It is argued that journalists who seek knowledge can upgrade their knowledge individually but who will benefit in the long run? At a workshop on ICT for journalist organized by PenPlusBytes,an international institute of ICT Journalism in collaboration with the French embassy in Ghana, it was quite clear, that almost all the participants who were journalist have had some basic training in ICT while others were even in the advanced stage. But one issue that came up was the fact that even though the participants could work with the computer, indepth knowledge was lacking. The workshop was therefore an opportunity for the participants to learn more practically methods of producing stories online, recording and transferring audio to their media houses no matter the distance. Blogs which earlier was perceived as a very complicated technique meant for a specialized ICT trainee turned out to be quite an interesting device when participants had the opportunity to create their own. In all such workshops seems to be some of the opportunities available for journalist who will want o specialize in ICT. What next one may ask after the work shop? How will these participants impact the knowledge gain on their colleagues as well as the content of their reportage? It is a collective situation, while the journalist now has the task to make use of the knowledge gain to enhance access which will promote public participation, there is also the need to provide current ICT tools the journalist will work with. Waiting for NGO to organize seminars or work shop and invite journalists will not help much as we are competing in a globalized world where ICT reigns. The media in the western world is moving a far heard and there is no time to waste, the journalist reporting locally should follow.
